Good Grief: Healing Through the Shadow of Loss

A touching journey toward understanding
Author Deborah Morris Coryell, who has worked in the health field for more than 25 years and has written numerous books on wellness, now takes pen to paper in order to shed light on the process of healing from grief and loss. She observes that "We only grieve for that which we have loved and, the nature of life being transitory, love and loss are intimately connected," among many other hidden truths about the essence of grief. Eloquent and poignant, Good Grief: Healing Through The Shadow Of Loss is a touching journey toward understanding the regret that makes us human.

THE BEST GRIEF BOOK YET!
Having lost my only child four years ago, I have read many books on grief. This one is by far the best! I found myself highlighting most of the pages and have just bought a second copy!

My advise: Buy This One!

Quenches the Sorrowful Soul
This book was remarkable in that, even just holding it and looking at the simple cover offered me some peace in a time of shear agony. Obviously, a lot of love went into it. The words are simple and beautiful AND offer great depth. So much soulful contemplation and growth can be derived from reading this book while grieving. The entire energy of the book is in concert with the healing process. I've recommended this book to many friends who have lost someone close to them and will many times again, God willing.

Note from the editor
I ran this manuscript by my two nieces in Kentucky before we finished to be sure they could understand the definitions of 19th-century terms, and so they could tell me what still needed explanation. We wanted to publish a work in women's history that young girls today could enjoy--and they liked it pretty well (at the ages of 12 and 15). I hope that parents and young girls pick this up to find that the issues that young girls face haven't changed much in some ways--Adeline worries about school, boys, and what to be when she grows up! Lots of information about games kids played, books they read and fun that they had in olden times. Julia's diary covers the five months or so she spent proving up her claim to a section of land in Greeley County, Kansas, along with four others (All known in the town lore as the "Greeley Girls"). They had a blast! surviving one of the worst blizzards in Kansas history (sweeping snow from the INSIDE of the house), rescuing travelers and serenading them with songs. Enjoy!

Larry Coryell's Power Jazz Guitar: Extending Your Creative Reach is a straightforward "how-to" instructional guide strongly recommended for anyone seeking to learn the rhythm and joy of playing true jazz guitar music. A Surgeon's Civil War: The Letters and Diary of Daniel M. Holt, M.D.

A very interesting book on a Civil War Surgeon
To all,

This book is diary with much detailed about the life of a 42 year old (pretty old back then) Surgeon (1st Lt...thus a acting assistant surgeon) in the Army of the Potomac in 1862 to 1863. A very interesting story is when his is captured by CSA forces in battle. A CSA soldiers also comes up to him (he is looking for wounded) and tried to shoot him at point blank range. A misfire saved his life. Later, R.E. Lee returns his personal item and lets him return to Yankee lines.

A bit slow at times for for history buffs or reenactors (I play a Union Surgeon in the ACWA.org), then a grand book indeed.

Sincerely,

I remain your humble servant, Major Arthur Henrick.

Jazz Rock Fusion: The People, the Music
Published in Paperback by Marion Boyars Publishers Ltd (1978)
Authors: Julie Coryell and Laura Friedman
Average review score:

A who's who of fusion's players at it's peak
Jazz-rock fusion brought a musical vocabulary that affects the music of today. Every player in this book contributed to the musical landscape of fusion. To those who not only lived through mid to late 70's music but experienced it during their formative years electronic jazz today seems a homogenized, watered down version of the forceful experimentation and freedom embodied by Weather Report, Return to Forever, Mahavishnu and others. More than mere nostalgia, this book may be seen as a record of the players who created a disavowed genre.

Jazz Guitar: Creative Comping, Soloing, and Improv
Published in Paperback by Backbeat Books (1998)
Author: Larry Coryell

Zero Stars
Larry has the chops but simply can't teach effectively either in books or in videos. I am not going to waste anymore money on his stuff. I advise you to look this book over in a music store first before deciding to buy it online.

More pearls from an accomplished master
Larry Coryell is one of the most gifted guitarists alive. Throughout his career he has shared his thoughts and ideas on his playing and his approach to solving problems or issues particular to jazz interpretation and improvising that he was dealing with. I don't think his contributions to the educational world are for beginners. This book is for an intermediate to advanced player. Providing you have some experience and knowledge under your belt, Larry's tips are fantastic and above all useable right away in your playing. I've admired his work for 25 years and this offering is another great piece of work, added to many others, that Larry has produced. His acoustic albums Standing Ovation and European Impressions (which I think is partially available on the Tributaries CD) are seminal works for me and even after twenty years bear repeated listening for more amazing things created by this master.

Great Book
Like many guitarists I have always admired Larry's work, so when I saw this book in a store I looked through it and bought it on the spot. I had always been into his fusion music and frankly didn't realize his jazz stuff was so strong. The first three tunes are walking bass jazz/blues tunes - the first is pure walking bass with chords, the second is based on the first but interspersed with some extended single note solo phrases. The third is based on the same chord progression as the first two but uses chord solo phrases in "traditional big band styling". This is fun stuff!!!! I have been working on these first three tunes for the last several months and have them almost completely memorized - not a simple task - and I haven't had this much fun playing guitar in a long time. After listening to the CD a number of times I also skipped ahead to learn a great bossa tune from Larry's Live in Bahia album. This book has definitely challenged and inspired me to pick up the guitar and get some practice in almost every day. The more you play these tunes the more you get out of them from an analysis standpoint. Also, I didn't know he has a signature jazz guitar out made by Cort but after listening to the CD I would certainly like to try one out.

When I saw a couple negative reviews here I felt that I had to put my proverbial two cents in and let people know that there is some great stuff in this book. This book is not for beginners or the meek and is not a collection of ii V I riffs. As Larry states in the intro, "You should have a working knowledge of theory, at least some theory (that's all I have), and I'll assume you know some jazz chords and the fundamental major, minor, augmented (whole tone) and diminished scales and arpeggios... The material covered here is sometimes easy, but some of it gets involved and there are some examples/exercises I hope will challenge you and open you up to play things maybe you didn't think you could play. That's how I felt when I first heard jazz players make this amazing music on their guitars - I had no idea how it was done, but I had to try to learn it."

There is some fun and pretty intense stuff in this book and it will keep me challenged for quite a while. I have paid more than the price of this book for a one hour lesson and gotten so much out of this book already that it's incredible. Be ready to put some time in but if you like Larry's playing and you've got the right attitude you can have a lot of fun and learn a lot with this book.

ZERO STARS From A Jazz Guitar Student at Berklee
I purchased two of Larry's books based on the single comments that were on line at the time. I wish I hadn't. I think his agent or publisher writes these glowing comments. A "serious" book? Give me a break. What is meant is "incomprehensible" unless you are already at Larry's level. Get his books, CD's recordings, etc.Doesn't that give you a clue? If you are an already accomplished jazz guitarist and want to learn how not to write a book on teaching jazz guitar than use his books as examples. I have four of Larry's CD's. I love his chops but he really doesn't teach well. Some people are born teachers, Larry is a born player. As I said before, look at this book in a music store before buying it online to save a few bucks.

a textbook of contemporary jazz, rock, & classical
Larry Coryell is a guitar legend. History proves this. While Larry is not a commercial success per se, his ideas and thoughts have withstood the test of time, easily surpassing more commerically successful endeavors by others. This is a serious book, no tab, although Larry's regular column in Guitar Player magazine had many of these pieces tabbed, it was published before most modern guitar manuals contained tab. Get this book and get the orginal recordings. Larry also has some new Cds and books out. Do the deal!! A splendid time is guaranteed!!
